Last January we drove to Bundaberg to watch sea turtles lay their eggs and hatch. This year we came to Bicheno to see penguins come out of the water for their nightly rest, and to feed their young. The place we stayed actually had the penguins walk through their property and have their nests all around. I must say, they make some really interesting sounds at night.
The hotel had this little set up every night. All the guests would come down to a viewing platform and watch them do their little march.
Flash photography scares the little fellows so I did not get very many pictures. I did get a quick video on and one picture. Hope you enjoy.
You know me, I have to learn some facts. So, the average fairy penguin is about 12-13 inches tall and can weigh around 3.3 lbs. with the average life span being a little over six years. Most penguins head out before sunrise to find food and return home after sunset. Talk about a long day. What is a neat animal you have gotten to see in its natural habitat?
