Port Arthur was our last stop in Tassie. This was a very special place. the picture below was the view from our hotel. The number one tourist attraction in Tasmania is Port Arthur. It is just the opposite of Sarah Island it has been restored and kept up. So what you see is a town with a church (even though it is just a shell).
I just got a different feeling at Port Arthur. They have two tours, a historical tour and a ghost tour at night. Both have interesting points, but if you have a chance, stay at the hotel in the grounds.
Port Arthur is a place I have heard a lot about since we moved to Australia. Port Arthur was the cite of the worst gun massacre in Australian history. After the Port Arthur shooting, was when the great gun giveback started. Now, if you believe the giveback or not. I am not wanting to start a gun debate.
It really was surreal to sit at our hotel and read the Wikipedia account of what happened during the shooting. It was horrible. One thing I do like though, is when I "Googgled" the shooting it was unlike America, I did not see the shooters face once. He was not made into a celebrity.
Can you see the Southern Cross below? The history at Port Arthur was amazing, the stars were awesome, and I would for sure put this stop on anyones list heading to Tasmania.
