This thought is totally a thought for me, but I felt like I would share. I have grown up hearing this parable over and over, but the other day, I had a light bulb. It is amazing how one story in the Bible and have so many meanings.
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
I am the world's worst at looking at my friends life's and thinking I wish that was me. I wish I could go there. I wish I could have that adventure. I wish I could have that job. I wish I could run that race. I wish......you fill in the blank.
After reading this parable, it was talking to me. EmilyAnne, STOP! Stop, looking at other peoples life. That is there life. You can be happy for them, encourage them, but do not be jealous of them or sad you didn't get to do or experience whatever. (I know it is really embarrassing to admit this.)
There life isn't the life that is for me. It isn't the life I signed up for. That is there life, their pay, their adventure, their job. It is just that, theirs. My life, adventure, pay, adventure, and job is mine.
Just like the people in the parable were mad because some people didn't work as hard and got the same pay. The boss told them, stop worrying about them. You are getting paid what is yours, and they are getting paid what is theirs. I am not in anyway saying that anyone is not working hard, we all are working hard. I am mainly pointing out the part where the boss told them to stop worrying about them! Everyone is living their life.
Isn't it really neat though to stop and think about the meaning, I have always thought about as the meaning of this parable. I mean a Christian of any length of time gets the ultimate prize, and in the grand scheme, that is all that matters. Looking at other peoples experiences only stumbles you while you are working for the ultimate goal. So I am going to keep working on to stop comparing my life to others, while I work towards the ultimate goal. What are your thoughts? What is a story in the Bible you have read recently that really made you turn a light bulb on?
